Aamir Khan — Biography
Aamir Khan was born on 14 March 1965 in Bombay (Mumbai), India, to a producer father and a director uncle already established in the industry. By his own account financial setbacks from his father's productions made for a difficult childhood; he was educated at Bombay Scottish School and Narsee Monjee College, played tennis, and worked backstage with an amateur theatre troupe.
He first appeared on screen as a child actor in his uncle Nasir Hussain's Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973), returning a decade later as an adult in Holi (1984). His cousin Mansoor Khan's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) delivered his breakthrough and won him a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut; his performance in Raakh (1989) brought a National Film Award, and his role in Raja Hindustani (1996) earned his first Filmfare Best Actor trophy.
Khan founded his own production company in 1999; the Oscar-nominated Lagaan saw him both produce and star, and he moved into directing with Taare Zameen Par in 2007. He went on to score box-office records with Ghajini, 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3, PK and Dangal, and became known for tackling social issues through the television programme Satyamev Jayate. The Indian government honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010.
