Akgün Kaçmaz — Biography

Akgün Kaçmaz (19 February 1935, Ankara – 12 November 2023, Fethiye) was a Turkish international footballer. Sources disagree on his position: the English, French and Portuguese Wikipedias call him a defender, the Spanish and Russian articles a midfielder and the Arabic one a forward, with the weight of evidence favouring defence. He stood 1.69 m.

His defining club was Fenerbahçe, where he played between 1951 and 1961 and is counted among the club's legendary figures; Fatih Karagümrük and Bandırmaspor also appear in his career record. German Wikipedia additionally describes him as one of the football pioneers of his native Ankara, and the Portuguese article notes that he later worked as a coach.

He was part of the Turkey squad at the 1954 FIFA World Cup finals. He died in Fethiye at the age of 88, with the Turkish Football Federation and the sports press reporting his death.
