Akgün Kaçmaz — Biography

Akgün Kaçmaz was born on 19 February 1935 in Ankara. He was 1.69 m tall, and sources give his position variously, most often as a defender and sometimes as a midfielder or forward. He is regarded as one of the football pioneers of Ankara and is also said to have worked as a coach.

He played for Fenerbahçe from 1951 to 1961, and the club counts him among its legendary players. Fatih Karagümrük and Bandırmaspor also appear in his career. With the Turkey under-18 team he took part in the 1953 World Youth Championship, which finished in third place. He wore national colours six times in all, four with the under-18s, once with the A2 side and once with the senior team, scoring one goal in these matches. He is best known as a member of the Turkey squad at the 1954 FIFA World Cup finals.

Kaçmaz lived in Marmaris and died aged 88 on 12 November 2023 in Fethiye, where he had been receiving treatment. He was buried in Marmaris after the funeral prayer the next day. The Turkish Football Federation and the sports press announced his death.
