Alberto Sordi — Biography
Alberto Sordi was born in Rome on 15 June 1920 and died in the same city on 24 February 2003, after a career spanning some sixty years. He made his stage debut in a revue company in the 1938-1939 season, and around the same time won a competition run by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to become the Italian dubbing voice of Oliver Hardy, work he kept up until 1956. Conscripted in 1940, he served in an infantry regiment's band while still finding time for the stage. His collaboration with Federico Fellini, beginning in 1951, produced The White Sheik and I Vitelloni, the latter earning him a Nastro d'Argento and pushing him toward heavier dramatic parts. From the 1960s he also directed, eventually completing nineteen films behind the camera. Alongside Nino Manfredi, Vittorio Gassman and Ugo Tognazzi he is counted among the defining figures of commedia all'italiana, while his pairing with Aldo Fabrizi and Anna Magnani became one of Roman cinema's most recognisable trios. He appeared in more than one hundred fifty films overall, winning a Silver Bear in Berlin, a Golden Globe, and repeated David di Donatello and Nastro d'Argento awards. He never married.
