Aynur Doğan — Biography

Aynur Doğan was born on 1 March 1975 in Çemişgezek, in Turkey's Tunceli province, and grew up in an Alevi Kurdish family. A contemporary singer and musician, she specializes in traditional Kurdish folk music, which she reinterprets with a modern sensibility shaped by Western influences. Her vocal artistry has carried an oral heritage, parts of it centuries old, onto international stages, making her one of the most prominent representatives of Kurdish culture in Turkey and worldwide.

In 1992 she relocated to Istanbul together with her family and received training in music and singing at the ASM Music School. Her recording career began in 2002 with the debut album Seyir. The follow-up, Keçe Kurdan, arrived in 2004 and earned her widespread fame. Later releases include Nûpel (2005), Rewend (2010), Hevra (2013), Hawniyaz (2016), Ateş Yanmayınca (2016), Hedûr - Solace of Time (2020) and Rabe (2024).

Across 2004 and 2005 she performed in numerous cities as part of the cultural events organized by Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism in European capitals. On 21 March 2005 she appeared as the cover star of The Times' special supplement devoted to the culture and riches of Turkey. Her many artistic collaborations include Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Kayhan Kalhor, Javier Limón, Kinan Azmeh, Mercan Dede, Cemil Qocgirî, the Morgenland All Star Band, Quatuor Voce and the Netherlands Blazers Ensemble.

In 2021 she was honored with the Artist Award at WOMEX, the international world music expo. She has also appeared on screen, featuring in Yavuz Turgul's film Gönül Yarası and in İstanbul Hatırası: Köprüyü Geçmek, a documentary about Istanbul's musical life.
