Doğan Babacan — Biography
Doğan Babacan (1930-2018) was one of the most recognized referees in Turkish football history. Born in Istanbul, he played for Beşiktaş, Karşıyaka, Kasımpaşa, and Hacettepe before turning to refereeing in 1955 and joining FIFA's list of referees in 1968.
At the 1974 World Cup he took charge of the West Germany–Chile match and sent off Chile's Carlos Caszely, issuing what became the first red card in World Cup history — making him the first Turkish referee to officiate a match at the tournament. Later that year he dismissed three Atlético Madrid players during the European Cup semifinal first leg against Celtic in Glasgow.
He also refereed the 1975 UEFA Super Cup final between Bayern Munich and Dynamo Kyiv before retiring from international refereeing in 1978. Babacan died on May 18, 2018, at the age of 88.
