Emre Aşık — Biography
Emre Aşık was born on 13 December 1973 in Bursa and broke into professional football in 1992 after coming through the youth ranks of Sönmez Filamentspor. Following a season with Balıkesirspor he moved to Fenerbahçe in 1993, was transferred to İstanbulspor on a free deal in 1996, and joined Galatasaray in 2000, becoming part of a defense built shortly after the club's UEFA Cup triumph.
He crossed to rival Beşiktaş in 2003, where a standout display in a 2-0 win over Chelsea earned him the nickname "the hero of Stamford Bridge" among fans; he rejoined Galatasaray in 2006, spent a season on loan at Ankaraspor, and retired in 2010 with a farewell match alongside former teammate Okan Buruk. Over his club career he made 343 appearances and scored 19 goals, and as a tough, combative centre-back he collected 108 bookings and 13 dismissals over his league career.
Called up to the national side in 1993, Aşık went on to feature for Turkey's two most successful squads, winning bronze at the 2002 World Cup and reaching the semi-finals of Euro 2008; he earned 52 caps in total and was awarded the Turkish State Medal of Distinguished Service. After hanging up his boots he moved into coaching before becoming a football pundit for beIN Sports Türkiye in 2023.
