Eren Derdiyok

Eren Derdiyok — Biography

Born in Basel in 1988 to a Kurdish Alevi family originally from eastern Turkey, Eren Derdiyok held dual citizenship but chose to represent Switzerland at international level. He started out with a small local club before catching the eye of a bigger Basel side, where his scoring rate as a teenager earned him a place in a title-winning squad and, from there, a move to a major German top-flight club.

Over his career the striker turned out for more than ten clubs across Germany, Turkey and Uzbekistan, with his most productive spells coming at that German club and later at an Istanbul side, where he won both a domestic cup and a league title. He earned more than a decade of caps for the Swiss national team, appearing at a European Championship and a World Cup.

After retiring from playing in early 2024, Derdiyok moved into coaching, first as an assistant at a former Swiss club and then in a Turkish club's youth setup. In the summer of 2026 he returned to the Istanbul club where he had once played, this time to take charge of its youth side.
