Georges Flamant — Biography

Born in Tunis on 3 September 1903, Georges Flamant began his screen career in 1931 playing a pimp in Jean Renoir's La Chienne, where he starred opposite Janie Marèse and began a relationship with her; while the two were on holiday in the south of France, a car crash killed her. Widely vilified in the press over the tragedy and shunned by parts of the film industry for years, Flamant nonetheless continued working as a character actor, appearing in roughly twenty films through the 1930s and 1950s, including Gibraltar (1938) and Three Days to Live (1957), in which he played Inspector Segalier. During this period he married the established star Viviane Romance and appeared alongside her in several productions. He closed out his film career playing Mr. Bigey, the father of the young protagonist, in François Truffaut's New Wave landmark The 400 Blows (1959). Flamant died on 23 July 1990.
