Hüner Coşkuner — Biography

Hüner Coşkuner built her grounding in classical Turkish music as a high-school student at the Üsküdar Music Society under Emin Ongan, studying with teachers including Melahat Pars, Kamuran Yarkın and Feriha Tunceli. She released her debut album, Doğuş, on Selami Şahin's Şahinler Plak label in 1987, and her 1989 record Sakın Dönme Geriye, put out by Çaçan Plak, is regarded by music critics as one of her strongest. In 1995 she moved to Elenor Müzik, releasing ten studio albums under that label; her 2000 album Klasikler 2 made a particularly strong impact, and in 2015 she released Seni Acele Görmem Lazım, for which she wrote both the words and music.

Alongside her recording career, she volunteered with organizations including the Foundation for Children with Leukemia and donated part of her album and poetry-book proceeds to charitable causes. She died in Istanbul on 4 February 2021 after a ten-month battle with bone marrow cancer, and was buried at Karacaahmet Cemetery following funeral prayers at Şakirin Mosque.
