Hurşut Meriç — Biography
Hurşut Meriç was born on 31 July 1983 in Amsterdam, the son of a florist, and is a Dutch-Turkish former footballer who played as a left winger and stands 1.73 m tall. He started out at amateur clubs SDZ, Blauw-Wit and AFC DWS; after transferring to AZ at 16 and failing to make the first team, he began his professional career in 2004 at AZ's feeder side EDO.
He spent two seasons at FC Türkiyemspor before being released when the club ran into financial trouble following its chairman's death. He then moved to ADO Den Haag, winning promotion to the Eredivisie in his first season and playing two seasons there. Midway through 2008-09 he joined Gençlerbirliği, where injuries limited him early on but he soon became a key player, was voted the fans' player of the year twice, and made 122 Süper Lig and 13 Turkish Cup appearances for the club, scoring 19 goals and providing 28 assists.
In 2013-14 he transferred to Çaykur Rizespor under Rıza Çalımbay, but injuries limited his appearances and he was left out of the squad in 2014-15, moving to Adana Demirspor that August. Later in his career he also played for Bandırmaspor and Karacabey Birlikspor. Meriç is especially remembered for a signature dribble; later players such as İrfan Can Kahveci have recreated it on the pitch as a salute to him.
