John Magaro — Biography

Born in Akron, Ohio, on 16 February 1983 to two schoolteachers, John Magaro began acting in local Ohio theatre as a teenager and went on to study theatre at Point Park University in Pittsburgh. His breakthrough came in 2012 playing a rock-band singer in David Chase's Not Fade Away, which won him the Hollywood Film Award's Spotlight prize; prominent supporting roles followed in Unbroken (2014) and Carol (2015), and in The Big Short (2015) he played young fund manager Charlie Geller, earning a SAG Award ensemble nomination. On television he played Vince Muccio in Orange Is the New Black and Leonard Peabody/Harold Jenkins in the first season of The Umbrella Academy. He has repeatedly collaborated with director Kelly Reichardt, starring as "Cookie" Figowitz in First Cow (2019), for which he received a Gotham Award nomination, as well as in Showing Up and The Mastermind. He played the young Silvio Dante in the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark, and won wide international acclaim for playing Arthur in Celine Song's Oscar-nominated Past Lives (2023). He made his Broadway debut in 2016 as escaped convict Earl Williams in a revival of The Front Page, and more recently starred opposite Steve Buscemi in Turkish director Tolga Karaçelik's Psycho Therapy.
