Nejat Yavaşoğulları — Biography
Mehmet Nejat Yavaşoğulları (born 3 August 1950 in Anadoluhisarı, Beykoz) is a Turkish architect and musician. He became interested in music in primary school, started playing guitar at Haydarpaşa High School, and performed in various bands during his university years; he graduated in architecture from the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, today's Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.
In 1975, together with Reha Öztanyel, he competed in Turkey's first Eurovision final with the song Caniko but did not place; the song was later used as music in the film Köçek, starring Müjde Ar. In the 1980s he won the Golden Orange Award for the theatre music he wrote for Ferhan Şensoy's Ortaoyuncular. He continued his architecture career through restoration work and served as a lecturer at Işık University.
As founder of the Turkish rock band Bulutsuzluk Özlemi, Yavaşoğulları is its singer as well as its composer and lyricist; he draws his lyrics from social events and returns often to the theme of freedom. The band's career has spanned more than four decades, and it marked its 40th anniversary with a concert at Kalamış in 2025. He is also known for the album Bedreddin, dedicated to Nâzım Hikmet and Sheikh Bedreddin. In 2026, the documentary Yaşamaya Mecbursun!, telling the band's story, screened at the Istanbul Film Festival and in cinemas.
