Ömer Toprak — Biography

Ömer Toprak was born on 21 July 1989 in Ravensburg, Germany, and played as a centre-back throughout his career. A dual Turkish-German national, he represented Germany's under-19 side in his youth before choosing to play internationally for Turkey.

He started out at local clubs TSB Ravensburg and FV Ravensburg before joining the SC Freiburg academy in 2005 and signing a professional contract in 2007. He broke into the first team in the 2008-09 season, becoming a regular in the league and helping the side earn promotion to the Bundesliga. A karting accident in 2009 left him with serious burns and sidelined for months, but he recovered and returned to the pitch. In 2011 he moved to Bayer Leverkusen, where he also gained experience in the UEFA Champions League.

Toprak played for Turkey's senior national team between 2011 and 2017, joined Borussia Dortmund in 2017, and spent the final years of his playing career at Antalyaspor until 2024. After retiring as a player he moved into coaching, joining Spain's Real Sociedad as an assistant coach in December 2025.
