Özdemir Erdoğan — Biography

Özdemir Erdoğan comes from a mixed family background — Armenian on his mother's side, Circassian through his grandmother, Black Sea Turkish through his father — and picked up music early at home, since his mother performed as a classical pianist and his uncle played violin and piano. Schooling finished at Kadıköy Commerce High School in 1960, after which his compulsory army service was spent teaching, as a reserve-officer instructor, in the Araplar village near Besni, Adıyaman. He is best known for the song Gurbet, which speaks to the lives of Turkish guest workers who left home in the 1960s. In 2021 comments he made about Zeki Müren and the LGBT community, in an interview published by Sabah, drew widespread public criticism. His accolades span a music-video honour prize from Kral TV in 2008, the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts' career-achievement award at the 2016 Istanbul Jazz Festival, a presidential Grand Award for Culture and Arts in 2020, and the State Artist title conferred back in 1998.
