Paolo Carlini — Biography

Born on 6 January 1922 in Santarcangelo di Romagna, Paolo Carlini trained under actress Teresa Franchini and made his stage debut very young, going on to appear in close to forty-five films between 1940 and his death; he died in Rome on 3 November 1979, reportedly from thrombosis, at fifty-seven.

Best known internationally for his supporting role as the hairdresser Mario opposite Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in Roman Holiday (1953), Carlini is counted in Italy among the earliest stars of the country's serialized sceneggiati television dramas, and in the 1950s co-starred with Lea Padovani in a run of acclaimed stage productions. On screen he played Masaniello in The Mute of Portici (1952) before roles in Don Chisciotte and Sancio Panza, The Fourth Wall and I 2 deputati, all in 1968.

His 1970s work included Un caso di coscienza (1970), L'uccello migratore (1972), My Darling Slave (1973), Il domestico (1974), and Amici più di prima and Like Rabid Dogs (both 1976); his final film, Mücevher Hırsızları, was released posthumously in 1981.
