Sibel Can — Biography

Sibel Can, whose birth name is Sibel Cangüre, was born on 1 August 1970 in Istanbul and is a Turkish singer and actress. With more than four decades on stage, she is regarded as one of the most recognisable female performers in Turkey; beyond music, she has also worked as an actress in television series and films and as a presenter.

Her stage career began not with singing but with dancing: she first appeared before an audience at fourteen as a belly dancer. She later moved into music and made her debut as a vocalist with the 1987 album Günah Bize. Orhan Gencebay, a towering figure of arabesque music, helped prepare that first record. In the early part of her career she performed arabesque and fantezi material, and releases such as Rüyalarda Buluşuruz (1989), Bir Güneş Batışında (1992) and Hatırasıdır (1994) brought her a broad following.

From the middle of the 1990s she gradually shifted her style toward pop. Bu Devirde (1997) and Daha Yolun Başındayım (1999) were followed in the 2000s by Canım Benim (2001), Sen Benimsin (2003), Özledin mi? (2005), Akşam Sefası (2007) and Benim Adım Aşk (2009). During those years she also recorded albums devoted to the Turkish classical repertoire, the best known being 2008's İşte Türk Sanat Müziği İşte Sibel Can.

Her productivity continued into the following decades. After Seyyah (2011), Meşk (2012), Galata (2014), Arabesque (2016), Yeni Aşkım (2018) and Hayat (2020), she kept releasing fresh material with Drama (2025) and Kıyamam (2026).

Alongside her recording career she built a screen presence. Following the series Kaldırım Çiçeği (1996), Gülüm (1997) and Bize Ne Oldu (1999), she drew attention as an actress by headlining Berivan in 2002, and that same year she appeared in the feature film Papatya ile Karabiber. She later took roles in Saklambaç (2005), Ahh İstanbul (2006) and Sevda'nın Bahçesi (2017), remaining visible on television while continuing to perform and release music.
