Suat Mamat — Biography

Born on 8 November 1930 in Bakırköy, Istanbul, and passing away on 3 February 2016 in the same city, Suat Mamat was a Turkish footballer and coach. He started his playing career at Ankara Demirspor before going on to represent Galatasaray, Beşiktaş and Vefa, becoming particularly closely identified with Galatasaray after many years wearing the club's colors and being regarded as one of the notable figures in its history.

Known for spectacular bicycle-kick goals and diving headers made possible by his athleticism, Mamat earned the nickname "Artist Suat" among fans of the era. Two posters from the 1950s, one capturing him mid-bicycle-kick and the other during a flying header, were printed by several newspapers and hung on the walls of many teahouses well into the early 1980s. Remembered as one of the early goal-scorers of Turkish football, he was also part of the national squad that took the field at the 1954 World Cup.

After retiring as a player, Mamat moved into coaching and led clubs such as Kırıkkalespor and Mersin İdmanyurdu.
