Absurd

Movie · 1981 · 2 people

Absurd (original title: Rosso Sangue) is a 1981 Italian slasher film that Joe D'Amato directed, photographed and co-produced. George Eastman, who penned the story and screenplay, takes the leading role, with Edmund Purdom also among the cast.

The picture is widely regarded as an unofficial follow-up to D'Amato's much-censored Antropophagus, and some commentators have called it a loose remake of that earlier work. Over the course of its distribution it circulated under a string of alternate names, among them Anthropophagus 2, Horrible and The Grim Reaper 2. Wizard Video released it in the United States as Monster Hunter, where a misleading note on the box art briefly sold it as the continuation of an unrelated zombie series.

In the United Kingdom, Absurd joined the notorious "video nasties" list and was one of the 39 films successfully prosecuted in 1984 under the obscene publications legislation. The uncut edition first put out by Medusa Home Video in 1981 has become scarce and now commands high prices among B-movie collectors.
