This 2010 drama, directed by Julian Schnabel, brings to the screen Rula Jebreal's own novel, adapted by the writer herself. It follows Miral, a young Palestinian woman born and raised in Jerusalem after the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, tracing how the surrounding conflict gradually pulls her toward resistance activity as she comes of age.

A second thread centers on Hind Husseini, an idealistic teacher who takes in children orphaned by the fighting and works to give them hope through education. Hiyam Abbas and Makram Khoury appear in the cast alongside Willem Dafoe, Vanessa Redgrave and Alexander Siddig. Produced jointly by France, Israel and Italy, the picture debuted at Venice in early September 2010 and reached French theaters roughly two weeks later. Musician Tom Waits also lent his talents to the score.
