Umut Gündoğan — Biography

Umut Gündoğan (born 12 June 1990 in Brussels) is a Belgian-Turkish professional footballer who plays as a midfielder. He is 1.70 m tall. The youngest son in a Turkish family that had migrated to Belgium in the 1970s to work in mining, he grew up playing street football in Brussels and joined the RSC Anderlecht academy at the age of seven; over a decade there, often competing against older age groups, he won the Belgian youth championship six times across various categories but could not break into a first team that included players such as Lucas Biglia, Ahmed Hassan and Mbark Boussoufa.

In 2007, after a brief trial at Dutch club MVV Maastricht, he moved on a free transfer to Süper Lig side Gençlerbirliği, but amid frequent coaching changes he never advanced from the club's youth team to the first team and was loaned out to second-tier side Fethiyespor. In 2009 he terminated his Gençlerbirliği contract and joined Dutch club RBC, where he had his first full professional season as a regular starter; he then moved to Belgian club Brussels, where injuries limited his playing time.

He returned to Turkey with Bucaspor in 2012. He joined Galatasaray in January 2014, winning the Turkish Cup with the club in the 2013-14 season and making his debut for Turkey's A2 national team that same year; he went on to play for Adana Demirspor in 2015, on loan at Manisaspor from January 2017, and for Boluspor in 2018. In August 2021, after more than a year as a free agent, he signed with Belgian club Olympic Charleroi. He married in September 2024.
