Alexandra Stewart — Biography

Alexandra Stewart was born on June 10, 1939, in Montreal, Quebec. In 1958 she moved to Paris to study art, and within a year made her screen debut in Les Motards, launching a long career spanning both French- and English-language cinema. Holding Canadian and French citizenship, she worked with director François Truffaut on several films, including The Bride Wore Black, Mississippi Mermaid and Day for Night. She also appeared in Roman Polanski's Frantic and in earlier productions such as Les liaisons dangereuses and L'eau a la bouche.

Beyond cinema, Stewart was a regular television presence, appearing on shows such as Les Jeux de 20 heures and L'Académie des neuf, lending her voice to the 1981 cartoon Space Stars, and taking guest roles in Highlander: The Series and The Saint. She narrated the English-language version of Chris Marker's 1983 documentary Sans Soleil. She served on the jury of the 2004 Chicago International Film Festival and presided over a super-8 film festival in Metz in 1990. She has a daughter, Justine, with director Louis Malle.
