Jean-Louis Trintignant — Biography
Born in Piolenc on 11 December 1930, Jean-Louis Trintignant had begun studying law before turning to acting, moving to Paris at twenty with his first stage appearance following in 1951. He gained recognition in 1956 opposite Brigitte Bardot in And God Created Woman, directed by Roger Vadim, and after military service became an international star playing a racing driver in a 1966 romantic drama directed by Claude Lelouch. Directors he worked with ranged from Costa-Gavras, Claude Chabrol and François Truffaut to Italian cinema's Bernardo Bertolucci, the French New Wave's Éric Rohmer, Poland's Krzysztof Kieślowski, and, late in his career, Austria's Michael Haneke. His work in The Man Who Lies brought him a Silver Bear in Berlin in 1968, and the following year his turn as a judge in Z won him top acting honours at Cannes. Other landmark roles followed in a 1970 film called The Conformist, a 1994 picture titled Three Colours: Red, and a 1969 drama called My Night at Maud's; his performance in Haneke's Amour then brought him a César together with the European Film Award in 2013. Following his racing uncles Louis and Maurice Trintignant, he competed as an amateur rally driver and took his class at the 1981 Monte Carlo Rally. Married first to actress Stéphane Audran and later to director Nadine Marquand, he was father of Marie Trintignant, an actress herself, who was killed by her partner, musician Bertrand Cantat, in 2003. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018, Trintignant died at home in Collias on 17 June 2022, aged 91.
