Michel Berto — Biography

Born Michel Hugues Ernest Noël Bertoliatti in Grenoble on 25 December 1939, Michel Berto worked in French theatre as both a stage director and an actor. On screen he spent roughly three decades, from the early 1970s to the mid-1990s, mostly in supporting and character parts, playing roles such as a deputy police commissioner in Playing with Fire and a teacher in Beau-père. He appeared in films as varied as Jacques Rivette's experimental Out 1 (1971), the post-apocalyptic drama Malevil (1981) and Le Bon Plaisir (1984), and continued working into the 1990s in films including Merci la vie, Dédé and The Three Brothers. He was married to two actresses who shared the surname Berto, Juliet Berto and Marie Berto. His body was found on 3 January 1996, though official records give the previous day, leaving the exact time of his death uncertain.
