Michel Serrault — Biography
Michel Serrault was born on 24 January 1928 in Brunoy. He entered the theatre in 1948, joining Robert Dhéry's troupe Les Branquignols, and made his screen debut in 1954 in Jean Loubignac's Ah! Les belles bacchantes. A year later he appeared alongside Simone Signoret in Henri-Georges Clouzot's thriller Diabolique, a role that brought him wider recognition.
Between 1973 and 1978 he played Albin, known onstage as Zaza, opposite Jean Poiret in Poiret's own play La Cage aux Folles, reprising the part in the 1978 film version. Across a screen career running from 1954 to 2007 and more than 130 productions, he was seen as one of his generation's most popular comic performers before turning, later on, toward stranger, darker outsider characters. He is the only actor to win the César for Best Actor three times, for La Cage aux Folles in 1979, Garde à vue in 1982, and Nelly et Monsieur Arnaud in 1996, and he also received the Légion d'Honneur, the Lumière Award and the Molière Award. He also appeared in Malevil, Belphégor, and the French-dubbed version of Amélie. Serrault died on 29 July 2007 near Honfleur; he was the father of actress Nathalie Serrault.
