Catherine Robbe-Grillet — Biography

Catherine Robbe-Grillet was born Catherine Rstakian in Paris on 24 September 1930, into a family of Armenian descent. After business schooling, she turned to literature, photography and cinema, building a career spanning more than five decades both in front of the camera and on the page.

Her marriage to writer-director Alain Robbe-Grillet, a leading figure of the French New Novel, shaped much of her artistic output: she appeared in his films L'Immortelle (1963), Trans-Europ-Express (1966), The Man Who Lies (1968), Eden and After (1970) and N. a pris les dés... (1971), and also acted in Successive Slidings of Pleasure (1974). Writing under the pen names Jean de Berg and Jeanne de Berg, she became known for sadomasochistic literature exploring BDSM themes.

A 2020 profile in the German newspaper FAZ portrayed her as an unabashed libertine, and she has remained a distinctive presence in French artistic circles, recognized both for her acting roles and for her literary voice.
