Haldun Dormen — Biography
Ahmet Haldun Dormen was born on 5 April 1928 in Mersin, the son of Turkish Cypriot businessman Sait Ömer Bey; the family's real surname was Önder before his father chose Dormen instead, and they settled in Istanbul's Şişli district soon after. After schooling at Galatasaray High School and Robert College, he earned a graduate degree in theatre at Yale, gaining acting and directing experience at American theatres and the Pasadena Playhouse.
He took the stage under Muhsin Ertuğrul at the Küçük Sahne company before founding his own troupe, the Dormen Theatre, in 1955; debt forced its closure in 1972 and economic conditions closed it again in 2002, and in between he worked in television and journalism. Known for comedy and vaudeville, he staged Turkey's first Western-style musical, Sokak Kızı İrma, in 1961, followed in the 1980s by Hisseli Harikalar Kumpanyası and Şen Sazın Bülbülleri; his 1985 production of Lüküs Hayat for the Istanbul City Theatres ran to sold-out houses for nearly thirty years.
Seen on screen in the films Hüdaverdi-Pırtık and Yeşil Işık and in the series Dadı as the manservant Pertev and Sayın Bakanım, Dormen was honored with the State Artist title and married public-relations pioneer Betül Mardin, with whom he had a son, Ömer.
Dormen died in Istanbul on 21 January 2026 at 97. The Turkish Theatre Festival in Frankfurt was named in his memory, and actor Zafer Algöz became the first winner of the newly created Haldun Dormen Special Award in the same city.
