Ezel Akay — Biography
Ezel Akay is a filmmaker who moved from directing commercials into cinema and works as director, producer and actor. In Turkish film he is known both as the producer of festival titles such as Derviş Zaim's Tabutta Rövaşata and as the director of features such as Neredesin Firuze and 7 Kocalı Hürmüz.
He studied mechanical engineering at Boğaziçi University and then theatre at Villanova University in the United States. After working as a copywriter, theatre person and production assistant, he directed hundreds of commercials through IFR, the company he co-founded. His film work began with producing: in 1996 Tabutta Rövaşata won best film at the Antalya Golden Orange festival, and he was later involved in making films such as Güneşe Yolculuk and Karpuz Kabuğundan Gemiler Yapmak. He turned to directing in 2004 with Neredesin Firuze, and with Hacivat Karagöz Neden Öldürüldü? (2006) won best director and best screenplay at the Golden Boll festival. 7 Kocalı Hürmüz (2009), 9 Kere Leyla (2020) and Osman Sekiz (2022) followed. In 2010 he left his work at IFR to work independently.
As an actor he appeared in Filler ve Çimen, Hırsız Var!, Beginner and Yarım Kalan Aşklar. With Haldun Çubukçu he wrote the historical novel Yargu.
