Robbery Alla Turca (Hırsız Var!)

Movie · 2005 · 19 people

Oğuzhan Tercan directed Hırsız Var!, known internationally as Robbery Alla Turca, a 2005 Turkish crime comedy. It opened in Turkey on 21 January 2005 and in Germany on 10 February, then soon played across Europe in three languages. It was made on a budget of about ten million dollars. The story brings the worlds of the mafia, tabloids, fashion and finance into collision, with humour and a little action.

The plot fits into a single night. A banker's wife, her fashion-designer brother, the famous model in his show, the model's gangster boyfriend, a gang planning a heist at the hotel hosting the show, and the gossip press cross paths in changing combinations. Haluk Bilginer, Mehmet Ali Erbil and Birol Ünel lead the cast, joined by Gamze Özçelik, Gülse Birsel, Ahmet Mümtaz Taylan and Fatih Akın. Suna Pekuysal plays a retired woman who has lost her savings in a bank. In Germany the film drew attention for including two German-Turkish actors, Birol Ünel and Fatih Akın.

Haluk Özenç wrote the script and Med Yapım produced it. Tercan had taken a long break from cinema after Uzlaşma and brought his advertising experience to this popular film. It was shot on a high-definition digital camera, a technology it uses unobtrusively.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

One night, a gang planning a hotel heist, a gangster and the gossip press on their heels: on paper it's right up my street. The film builds its pace from the crossing paths of its big cast and wraps up in 100 minutes. But the action really is just a sprinkle; the weight is on comedy. If you want suspense you may be let down; if you're after a light crime comedy, you'll have fun.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Hırsız Var! is the film in which Oğuzhan Tercan, after a long break from cinema following Uzlaşma, carried his advertising experience into popular filmmaking. The ensemble structure, squeezed into a single night with many characters crossing in shifting combinations, is an interesting choice, and colliding the worlds of the mafia, fashion, finance and the tabloids is ripe for satire. Being shot on a high-definition digital camera never draws attention to itself; the technology stays out of the story's way, which is a plus. But the structure tends to scatter as the number of characters grows, and some figures never get beyond types. The contrasting acting styles of Haluk Bilginer, Mehmet Ali Erbil and Birol Ünel make for an intriguing mix.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Hırsız Var! is a light crime comedy, and at 100 minutes it doesn't drag. There's the mafia, a gangster and a robbery, but it is all played for laughs. Still, it's not for young children, because the crime world is always front and centre. Teenagers and adults can watch it together and have a laugh, and grandparents will enjoy spotting Suna Pekuysal in the cast.
