Atıl İnaç — Biography

Atıl İnaç was born on 22 March 1975 in Ankara into a family of filmmakers: his mother was a screenwriter and his father a producer, and he grew up alongside director brothers Ulaş İnaç and Selçuk İnaç. He attended high school in the United States, studied philosophy at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, then earned a philosophy degree at Boğaziçi University before continuing graduate work in philosophy of language at Claremont Graduate University. He produced three nationally broadcast TRT radio programs, and an amateur interest in jazz led him to produce and host jazz-focused shows on Açık Radyo, where he also wrote articles and conducted interviews with jazz musicians. During graduate school he worked as a branding consultant for the Pittard Sullivan firm in Los Angeles, then returned to Istanbul, where he wrote and directed television series and sitcoms from 2003 to 2007. He made his feature directing debut in 2007 with Zincirbozan, a controversial depiction of Turkey's 1980 military coup in which he also played the character Sedat. He followed it with the box-office hit comedy Kolpaçino, Büyük Oyun, partly filmed in post-war Iraq, and Partner, co-directed with his brother Ulaş İnaç. His 2013 film Daire, whose post-production was supported by a crowdfunding campaign, won him Best Director at the Adana International Film Festival and contributed to a Best Film win at the Ankara International Film Festival the following year.
