Nalan Kuruçim — Biography

Nalan Kuruçim is an actress who trained in theatre and moved into television and film. She is best known for playing Nurten in Leyla ile Mecnun, Türkan Dağdeviren in Sen Anlat Karadeniz and Semiha in Senden Önce. In 2020 she won Best Supporting Actress at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival for her role as İffet in the film Hayaletler, and in 2025 she played the character Kader Çetin in the series Kral Kaybederse.

While studying at the Faculty of Economics at Gazi University she began doing theatre in the university club. After graduating she came to Istanbul and studied for four years in the theatre department of the Müjdat Gezen Art Center, graduating in 1997. She worked with Tiyatro Oyunevi: she appeared in Döne Döne (2004) and Leonce ile Lena (2008, as Valerio), both directed by Mahir Günşiray, and directed one episode of Son Bir Kez and acted in another.

On television she appeared from the mid-1990s in series such as Çiçek Taksi and Kara Melek, and in the 2000s took roles in Tatlı Hayat, Kampüsistan, Büyük Yalan, Ah İstanbul and Ezo Gelin. In cinema she worked with directors such as Tayfun Pirselimoğlu, Kutluğ Ataman, Bahman Ghobadi and Azra Deniz Okyay, and appeared in the films Daire, Bizim İçin Şampiyon, Aydede and Kuru Otlar Üstüne. She has served as a jury member at the 23rd Architecture and Urban Film Festival and the 7th Boğaziçi International Film Festival.

Their work through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Nalan Kuruçim's film work gathers in pictures with a pronounced directorial voice: Güllü in Kutluğ Ataman's Kuzu, Kevser in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Kuru Otlar Üstüne. İffet in Hayaletler won her the Best Supporting Actress award at the Golden Orange in 2020, which makes Hayaletler the sensible place to begin.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Nalan Kuruçim's film roles are less the bright middle class than women of provincial and marginal life: Güllü in the poor eastern Anatolian village of Kuzu, Masume among the people pushed to the edge of society in Daire, Necla in the small town of Aydede. What makes her valuable in these films, in my view, is that she carries the voice of those worlds without exaggeration.
