Asuman Dabak — Biography

With a background in theatre, Asuman Dabak works as a Turkish actress and voice artist. She became widely known as Menekşe in Tatlı Hayat. Later she appeared in series such as Hudutsuz Sevda and Aynadaki Yabancı, and she also founded a theatre company under her own name.

Dabak studied tourism and hotel management and had no formal acting training; she moved to the stage on the strength of keen observation and interpretation. She began at the Bahçelievler Municipal Theatre and performed in plays such as Kaç Baba Kaç and Boing Boing. Her first screen appearance was as Emine in Örümcek, and Tatlı Hayat (2001) made her name. In the 2000s she played Nilgün in Dayı, Nermin Yurdum in Şans Kapıyı Kırınca and Münevver in Adem'in Trenleri, and in 2006 founded the Asuman Dabak Theatre. She also did voice work and hosted a programme on a private channel.

From the 2010s she played Müzeyyen Hanım in Kağıt, Füsun in Kurtuluş Son Durak, Mecnun's mother in Leyla ile Mecnun, Cemile in Tutunamayanlar, Nedime Leto in Hudutsuz Sevda and Hanzade Karaaslan in Aynadaki Yabancı, and also appeared in productions such as Eyvah Karım and Ege'nin Hamsisi. Her marriage, which began in 2005, ended in 2014; she has a son.

Their work through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Asuman Dabak's television path opens inside the large casts of situation comedy: Menekşe Kocaman in Tatlı Hayat, Türkan in Yedi Numara. In shows like these it is wrong to expect a single character arc; the work is keeping the ensemble's rhythm. The crowd of Tatlı Hayat, with a family moving from Gültepe to Etiler and their upstairs neighbours, is in my view the ground where Dabak works most comfortably.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Comedy weighs heavily in Asuman Dabak's work, but the tone is not a single one. Pakize in Onur Ünlü's Leyla ile Mecnun and Cemile in Tutunamayanlar work by the rules of absurdist comedy; Nedime Marten Leto in Hudutsuz Sevda stands in a love-and-thriller series that begins with a blood feud. In my view Dabak's range is tested between those two ends: the particular rhythm of the absurd and the seriousness of drama.
