Birol Ünel — Biography
Birol Ünel was born on 18 August 1961 in Silifke, Mersin province, and grew up in Bremen after his family emigrated to Germany in 1968. He trained at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media before launching his film career in 1987 with Der Passagier.
He became best known for his searing portrayal of Cahit Tomruk, a self-destructive drinker, in Fatih Akın's Head-On, a role that won him the German Film Award for Best Actor and a nomination for the European Film Award. Ünel also appeared in Akın's Soul Kitchen and took part in numerous German and Turkish film, television and stage productions over his career. He died in Berlin on 3 September 2020.
