Tatort
Tatort is a German-language crime series that has been running since its first episode, Taxi nach Leipzig, aired on 29 November 1970. Conceived by Gunther Witte, it is jointly produced by ARD's regional member stations in Germany together with Austria's ORF and Switzerland's SRF, each broadcaster contributing episodes built around its own local police team.
Every episode tells a self-contained, roughly 90-minute story in which investigators solve a case in a German, Austrian or Swiss city. The architecture, customs and dialects of each location are a hallmark of the format, and the city itself often becomes the real protagonist of an episode. Several detectives, most famously Götz George's Schimanski, have achieved iconic status in German popular culture.
Around 30 to 35 new episodes premiere each year on Sunday evenings on Das Erste and ORF 2. As the longest-running and most-watched crime series in the German-speaking world, Tatort has received numerous honours, including nominations and wins for the Grimme-Preis, the German Television Award and the Goldene Kamera.
