Wolffs Revier

TV Series · 1992–2006 · 18 people

Karl-Heinz Willschrei created Wolffs Revier, a long-running German crime drama broadcast on Sat.1. Its first episode aired on September 17, 1992, and it ran until May 24, 2006, producing 173 episodes over 13 seasons. The series won the Grimme-Preis, one of Germany's respected television awards, and is also credited with the Dutch Zilveren Televizier-Tulp.

The story follows chief inspector Andreas Wolff of Berlin's homicide department and his investigations. Jürgen Heinrich plays Wolff and Nadine Seiffert plays his daughter Verena. In the first 99 episodes Wolff works alongside colleagues Günther Sawatzki (Klaus Pönitz) and Dr. Peter Fried (Gerd Wameling); in episode 100 the pair give way to the young Thomas "Tom" Borkmann (Steven Merting).

Behind the series stand the production companies Borussia Media Nostro Film and Odeon Film Sat.1, and directors including Peter Adam, Michael Lähn and Kaspar Heidelbach worked on episodes. The cast list also includes Turkish-German actors such as Jale Arıkan, Tim Seyfi, Tayfun Bademsoy, Erden Alkan, Orhan Kılıç and Baki Davrak. A television film shot in 2011, Wolff – Kampf im Revier, aired on January 17, 2012 to revive the series, but it did not draw enough interest to justify further productions. In France it aired from 1995 on Jimmy and RTL9.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Thirteen seasons and 173 episodes is a serious endurance test for any crime show. The backbone of Wolffs Revier is clear: chief inspector Andreas Wolff and his investigations at Berlin's homicide department. The bond between Jürgen Heinrich's Wolff and his daughter Verena, played by Nadine Seiffert, gives a case-by-case show some emotional ground to hold on to. Swapping Sawatzki and Dr. Fried for the young Tom Borkmann in episode 100 is a nice turn that refreshes the team dynamic. Still, at this length it's only natural that some stretches start to feel alike, so taking breaks between binges helps.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

What makes Wolffs Revier interesting for a Turkish viewer is that its cast list includes Turkish-German actors such as Jale Arıkan, Tim Seyfi, Tayfun Bademsoy, Erden Alkan, Orhan Kılıç and Baki Davrak. Seeing these names in a Sat.1 crime series that ran from 1992 to 2006 is a small but meaningful trace of migrant generations on German television. The cast list alone doesn't say whether they stand at the centre of the story or on its edges, though; viewers will have to judge that for themselves. Winning a respected award like the Grimme-Preis shows the series was taken seriously in the German television of its day.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Berlin, a homicide unit, a stubborn chief inspector: on paper, it's exactly my genre. But long-running German crime shows like this usually build tension through investigation rather than chases, so expect patient detective work from Wolffs Revier, not explosive set pieces. The Grimme-Preis is a good sign of quality. If you want fast pacing, pick episodes selectively; if you want a solid case story, dive right in.
