Michael Mendl — Biography

Michael Mendl, originally named Michael Sandrock, was born on 20 April 1944 in the small German town of Lünen. A prolific character actor on stage, film and television since the mid-1970s, he built a resume of well over a hundred credits and became internationally recognisable for portraying General Weidling in Downfall, the drama of Adolf Hitler's last days. German audiences also know him from repeated guest turns on Tatort and parts in the detective series Der Alte, Siska and Donna Leon, plus a body of dubbing and voice-over work; opposite Christiane Hörbiger in the 2005 TV film Mathilde Liebt, his performance drew particular praise.

He won the Bavarian Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for 14 Days to Life in 1998, the Golden Camera Award for Best German Actor for In the Shadow of Power in 2004, and the Jupiter Award for Best German TV Actor for The Visit in 2009, and he also holds the Askania Award. He lives in Munich with his wife, Carolin Fink, and their three children, and continues to act today.
