Uwe Bohm — Biography

Born Uwe Enkelmann, Uwe Bohm grew up in Hamburg's Wilhelmsburg district, born 23 January 1962 into a troubled family background; at eleven he was cast by director Hark Bohm in the 1973 film I Can Also Build an Ark, and Hark Bohm later formally adopted him, giving him the Bohm surname and continuing to work with him on several films. He briefly trained as a painter and varnisher before leaving the apprenticeship for acting, breaking through in 1976 with the lead in Hark Bohm's youth drama North Sea Is Dead Sea. Yasemin (1988) became West Germany's official submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 61st Academy Awards, and Herzlich willkommen (1990) screened at the 40th Berlin International Film Festival. From the 1980s into the 2000s he worked repeatedly on stage with director Peter Zadek, and on television became known for villainous roles, appearing nine times in the series Tatort. Later in his career he appeared in Gold (2013), Sanctuary (2015) and Goodbye Berlin (2016). Married to actress Ninon Bohm, he died of a sudden cardiac arrest in Berlin on 8 April 2022, at the age of 60.
