Hilmi Sözer — Biography

Hilmi Sözer is a Turkish-German actor and comedian known for bringing the everyday life of fourth-generation Turkish immigrants in Germany, and Turkish-German culture more broadly, to the screen. Born in Ankara on 9 March 1970 to a family that emigrated to Germany as guest workers in 1972, he completed basic schooling in 1990 in Tönisberg, a district of Kempen in North Rhine-Westphalia, then moved to Duisburg to train in theatre and acting.

He entered film in 1994 with Voll Normaal, made alongside German comedian Tom Gerhardts, and also appeared around the same time in Ballermann 6 and an adaptation of Austrian writer Robert Schneider's Dreck. Sözer appeared in roughly 25 films between 1994 and 2007, and won a best foreign actor award in 2000 for his role in Kanak Attack. His career continued with roles in the Roman-era comedy Germanikus (2004), Jerichow (2008), Brother and Sister (2016), The Tale of a Thousand and One Lives (2018) and It's for Your Own Good (2020).
