Rufus — Biography
Jacques Narcy, known professionally as Rufus, is a French actor and comedian born on 19 December 1942 in Riom. After three years of medical studies he took over the running of a theatre, before turning to film in the late 1960s and building a career spanning five decades as one of French cinema's most prolific character actors. International audiences know him best as Raphaël Poulain, the withdrawn father in Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Amélie; earlier credits include Roman Polanski's The Tenant and Radu Mihaileanu's Holocaust tragicomedy Train of Life. He worked with directors such as Claude Lelouch, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Demy and Jules Dassin, and picked up a César nomination along the way. He also performed on stage and helped popularize the café-théâtre comedy scene of 1970s France. Narcy lives in Neauphle-le-Château in the Yvelines and has three children; his daughter Zoé and son Basile are themselves actors. France later made him a Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres and a Commander of the National Order of Merit.
