A Very Long Engagement (Kayıp Nişanlı)

Movie · 2004–2005 · 2 people

A Very Long Engagement is a 2004 French-American romantic war drama directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, adapted from Sébastien Japrisot's 1991 novel of the same name. Audrey Tautou plays Mathilde, a young woman whose fiancé Manech (Gaspard Ulliel) is reported killed in World War I. Refusing to accept his death, she trusts her intuition and begins a determined search for him. Her investigation reveals that Manech was one of five French soldiers condemned for deliberately wounding themselves to escape the front, and left to die in no man's land. As Mathilde follows scattered clues and testimonies, she uncovers the brutal realities of the trenches while clinging to the hope that the man she loves is still alive. The ensemble cast also includes Marion Cotillard, Dominique Pinon and Jodie Foster. The film earned two Academy Award nominations, and Cotillard won the César Award for Best Supporting Actress while Ulliel received the César for Most Promising Actor.
