Mehmet Ali Erbil — Biography

Born on 8 February 1957 in Istanbul, Mehmet Ali Erbil is the son of theatre and film actor Saadettin Erbil. After completing his schooling in Istanbul, Ankara and Balıkesir, he entered the Theatre Department of the Ankara State Conservatory as a boarding student in 1971 and, upon graduating, began working at the State Theatre, where he appeared in numerous productions including Equus.

Erbil moved into cinema in the 1980s and made his first steps in television with entertainment programmes on TRT during the single-channel era. As private broadcasters spread, he became one of the country's best-known showmen through the game and variety shows he hosted; Çarkıfelek, which he presented for many years on various channels, remains the programme most closely identified with him. He acted in series such as Tatlı Kaçıklar and Aşkım Aşkım, and left his mark on cinema with the character Deli Bedri in the revived Hababam Sınıfı films and with roles in Kahpe Bizans, Hemşo and Hırsız Var!, while also doing voice work for animated features. He has battled capillary leak syndrome, a rare condition that forced long breaks in his career, and appeared in the 2024 film Bakkal Amca: Mahmut Tuncer.

Their work through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

The easiest family start with Mehmet Ali Erbil is Keloğlan Karaprens'e Karşı, a fairy-tale comedy that turns familiar tale figures into parody. Hababam Sınıfı Merhaba, with its effort to save the school, suits a wider age range. Hırsız Var! is a crime comedy built around a hotel heist, better watched with grown-ups than with children.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Much of Mehmet Ali Erbil's film work leans on ready-made brands: Hababam Sınıfı Merhaba, Hababam Sınıfı Askerde and Hababam Sınıfı Üç Buçuk, all continuations of the old series. With Deli Bedri heading the school in all three, I think the films have Erbil repeat a known figure instead of trying something new; nostalgia for the series is their main capital.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Kahpe Bizans and Ömerçip show the clearest vein in Mehmet Ali Erbil's cinema: having fun with the moulds of old Yeşilçam. As Emperor Illetyus in Kahpe Bizans he mocks the kitsch historical dramas of the 1970s; as the poor but honest driver Adnan in Ömerçip he plays with the old melodrama template. In my view these films carry the mix of longing and mockery with which the early 2000s looked back at Yeşilçam.
