Peker Açıkalın — Biography

Peker Açıkalın is one of the familiar faces of Turkish television and film comedy. He reached the widest audience as Gaffur, the doorman in Avrupa Yakası, and the "çakkıdı" dance tied to the character. He had already made his name as Fırıldak Ömer in Çiçek Taksi.

After graduating from the Istanbul University State Conservatory he performed in the theatre companies of Nedim Saban, Taner Barlas and Ali Poyrazoğlu. His first television appearance came in 1989 with Kim Bunlar? on TRT 1. Through the 1990s and 2000s he appeared in series such as Çiçek Taksi, Ekmek Teknesi (as Cengiz), Avrupa Yakası, Mert ile Gert and Yahşi Cazibe; he left Avrupa Yakası after about a year and a half, and quit Yahşi Cazibe saying his character's influence had been reduced. In cinema his best-known parts are in Kolay Para, Psiko in the Hababam Sınıfı films, Bahattin in the Maskeli Beşler series and Kadir in Türkler Çıldırmış Olmalı; Destere, Vezir Parmağı, Karımı Gördünüz Mü? and Baba 1.5 are also on his filmography.

His comic acting has won recognition: he took the Sadri Alışık award for best supporting actor for Kolay Para and the Golden Butterfly for best male comedy actor in 2007. His father's side of the family came from Skopje and his mother's from Thessaloniki.

Their work through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

For family viewing with Peker Açıkalın, Çiçek taksi and Ekmek Teknesi are good places to begin: both are comedy series about a family's everyday life, with Açıkalın as Ömer Şen in the first and Ali Cengiz Kayaoğlu in the second. Hababam Sınıfı Üç Buçuk is a horror-comedy, so look it over before showing it to younger children. Gaffur Aksoy in Avrupa Yakası is also a well-liked comic figure, still remembered for the doorman and his dance.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Peker Açıkalın's series work rests on character comedy, while in film he often joins franchise sequels: Psiko in both Hababam Sınıfı Askerde and Hababam Sınıfı Üç Buçuk, Bahattin in Maskeli Beşler: Kıbrıs and Maskeli Beşler: Irak. In my view that repetition does not give him on the big screen the sharp identity Gaffur gave him; franchise films lean on a known world and leave the actor little room to build something new.
