Hasan Karacadağ — Biography

Hasan Karacadağ was born on 20 October 1976 in Şanlıurfa. He left his studies at the Gülhane Military Medical Academy in Ankara in his third year and moved to Japan, completing the film directing program at Nippon Eizo-Juku in 1998 and taking part in around fifty international festivals. His short film "Pas" won prizes at the Tokyo Video Festival and the JVC Film Festival, and he won further Tokyo Video Festival awards three years running; in 1999 his film "Hummadruz" screened at the Istanbul International Film Festival. Having directed numerous shorts, documentaries, TV movies and series in both Turkey and Japan, Karacadağ brought jinn-themed horror to Turkish cinema with the first Dabbe film in 2006, a series that later found a wide audience and cult status through Netflix. In 2016 he directed "Magi," with Michael Madsen and Stephen Baldwin, which became his last known film. After the 2016 coup attempt, he was among roughly 3,000 people for whom an arrest warrant was issued over related social media posts; writing under the name "Can Batuta," he left Turkey for Japan and was not seen again after a final post in December 2018.
