Jacques Dufilho — Biography
Jacques Dufilho, born in Bègles on 19 February 1914, was a French stage, film and television performer who appeared in more than sixty-five French productions and was also a familiar face in Italian cinema. He started out playing small comic types, turning up in forgettable pictures as well as in films that stayed with audiences, including War of the Buttons, directed by Yves Robert, and Louis Malle's Zazie in the Metro; he was also a regular collaborator of director Jean-Pierre Mocky. In the mid-1970s he landed a lead role in a film directed by Jean-Louis Trintignant and won the César for Best Supporting Actor as the chief engineer in Le Crabe-tambour; that same year he played a patriotic grocer in Jean-Jacques Annaud's Oscar-winning Black and White in Color and a proud Breton farmer in a Claude Chabrol adaptation. In 1980 he took a second César for portraying an older gay character in Claude Sautet's Un mauvais fils, and later in his career played Marshal Pétain in a controversial film. He also held the Molière Award for Best Actor and was known as a collector of vintage Bugatti automobiles. He died in Lectoure on 28 August 2005.
