Jean Gruault — Biography
Jean Gruault was born on 3 August 1924 in Fontenay-sous-Bois and built his career among the directors who founded the French New Wave, writing for François Truffaut as well as Jean-Luc Godard and Jacques Rivette. From 1960 to 1995 he put his name on twenty-five screenplays, among them Truffaut's Jules et Jim, The Wild Child and The Story of Adele H. The script he wrote for Mon oncle d'Amérique (1980) earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay and a César nomination besides; over his career he was also nominated twice by the National Society of Film Critics for Best Screenplay and took home a David di Donatello for best foreign screenplay. He occasionally stepped in front of the camera too, acting in Le Beau Serge and Vanina Vanini, and appeared in the documentary François Truffaut: Stolen Portraits. He died in Paris, aged 90, on 8 June 2015.
