Mehmet Emin Toprak — Biography
Mehmet Emin Toprak was born on 11 September 1974 in the Yenice district of Çanakkale and had a short but lasting film career. As a nephew of director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, he took the lead in three films his uncle made behind the camera: Kasaba, Mayıs Sıkıntısı and Uzak. His performance in Uzak won him the best supporting actor prize at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. Only a few months into his marriage to Emel Toprak, he was killed in December 2002 at age 28 in a car crash while driving home from the Ankara Film Festival. Not long after his death, when Uzak screened at Cannes in 2003, the festival awarded him its best actor prize jointly with his co-star Muzaffer Özdemir, making him, posthumously, the first Turkish actor to win it. His career, cut short so early, is remembered as a real contribution to Turkish cinema's international standing.
