Mehmet Emin Toprak — Biography
Mehmet Emin Toprak was born on 11 September 1974 in the Yenice district of Çanakkale and died on 2 December 2002 in a car accident near the nearby town of Çan. A nephew of director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, he took leading parts in his uncle's films Kasaba, Mayıs Sıkıntısı and Uzak, earning the best supporting actor prize at the Antalya Film Festival for his work in Uzak. He was 28 and had married his wife Emel Toprak only months before the crash, which happened as he drove home from the Ankara Film Festival. Weeks later, when Uzak had its Cannes premiere in 2003, the festival honored him after his death with its award for best actor, shared with co-star Muzaffer Özdemir — making him the first Turkish performer to win the prize. His brief but memorable career helped bring wider international attention to Turkish cinema.
