The Small Town (Kasaba)

Kasaba is a 1997 Turkish drama film written and directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, marking his feature film debut. Its semi-autobiographical story is adapted from a text by the director's sister Emin Ceylan, drawing on their shared childhood memories in a remote Anatolian small town. The cast includes Mehmet Emin Toprak and Muzaffer Özdemir.

Shot in black and white, the film portrays a three-generation family in a small town in western Turkey during the 1970s, seen through the eyes of children as they face life's growing complexity while becoming adults. Noted for its restrained storytelling, striking photography and semi-documentary tone, the film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in February 1998.
