Gazanfer Ündüz — Biography

Gazanfer Ündüz, whose full name is Mehmet Gazanfer Ündüz, is a character actor who came up through the theatre and has worked in television series, film and voice-over since the 1980s. His main credits include Doktor Tarık in Kuruntu Ailesi, the police series Arka Sokaklar and, more recently, the role of Halis in Trafiği Öğreniyoruz; he continues to take on new projects.

He first made his mark on television in the mid-1980s: he played Doktor Tarık in Kuruntu Ailesi, was Ömer Bey in Uğurlugiller, and returned to the Tarık character in Hüsnü Bey Amca and Bizim Kuruntu Ailesi. In the 2000s he took supporting parts, among them doctors, in series such as Melekler Adası, Belalı Baldız, Beşinci Boyut, Gece Gündüz, Yürek Yarası and Cam Kırıkları. He first entered Arka Sokaklar as a guest in 2006, returned in 2013 as Soydan Öğüt and appeared in several more seasons in the following years. Ah Neriman, Gamsız Hayat, Hangimiz Sevmedik and Kadın (as Suat Bey) are other work from this period.

In film he played the Denizli prison director in Hür Adam: Bediüzzaman Said Nursi and Nejat Egeli in Ağır Romantik, and he played Müfit in Uysallar. As a voice actor he gave Galip his voice in the Canım Kardeşim productions. He married the actress Fulya Özcan in 1984; the marriage ended in 2004, and their son Tarık Ündüz is also an actor.

Their work through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Gazanfer Ündüz's television takes in almost every phase of the Turkish series: Kuruntu Ailesi, which began in 1985 and is counted among the pioneers of the sitcom form; Arka Sokaklar, counted as the longest-running weekly production in Turkish television history; Suat Bey in Kadın; Müfit in Netflix's Uysallar. That one actor moves across forty years through comedy, police drama and psychological drama is, in my view, also a way of watching how the language of television has changed.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Gazanfer Ündüz's work circles the family across the decades, and how the family is told changes: the television family of the 1980s in Kuruntu Ailesi, the 1970s household of three generations in Kasaba, and the unsettled family of an architect in a midlife crisis in Uysallar. In my view these three works sum up how the family in Turkish storytelling moved from a warm sitcom setting to a stage of crisis.
