Güler Ökten — Biography

Servet Güler Kıpçak Ökten was born on 14 November 1941 in Isparta, the daughter of actor and director Kani Kıpçak and one of the first students to graduate under Yıldız Kenter. A conservatory graduate, she began her artistic career in 1947 with a role in a children's film and took to the stage in 1960; she was married to director Zeki Ökten. Her film roles include Sürü, Demiryol, Bir Demet Menekşe, At and Ses, and her performance in Kırık Bir Aşk Hikayesi brought her the Golden Orange best supporting actress award in 1982 and a Cinema Writers' Association award the following year; she later won the same category twice at the Ankara Film Festival. Alongside acting she has worked extensively as a voice actor, sometimes as dubbing director, and on the art departments of several productions. Television audiences know her best as the nicknamed 'Kızıl' Dr. Türkan in Bizimkiler and as Cevriye in Yaprak Dökümü, and she also appeared in films such as Celal Tan ve Ailesinin Aşırı Acıklı Hikayesi (2011) and İtirazım Var (2014). She received the Golden Orange Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 and the Sadri Alışık Cinema Honor Award in 2019, and continued appearing on screen into her eighties, including the 2024 series Annem Ankara.

Their work through different eyes

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Sürü, Demiryol, At and Kırık Bir Aşk Hikayesi: between 1979 and 1982 Güler Ökten appeared in films by directors as different as Zeki Ökten, Yavuz Özkan, Ali Özgentürk and Ömer Kavur. In my view that makes her a shared face of the period's socially minded cinema, a thread that joins very different hands through the same actress.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Sedef's grandmother in Leyla ile Mecnun, the mother in Kaçıklık Diploması, Zarife Nine in Zer: the matriarch of the generations stands out in Güler Ökten's later work. The type is a quick way of sketching the backbone of the family in Turkey, but in my view it also squeezes her into one mould; Fitnat in Kırık Bir Aşk Hikayesi recalls the wider acting that sits outside this line.
