Zer
Zer is a 2017 drama film directed and written by Kâzım Öz. A co-production of Turkey, Germany, and the United States, the film was shot in Turkish and Kurdish. It premiered as part of the 36th International Istanbul Film Festival before its theatrical release on April 21, 2017.
The story follows Jan, a young musicology student living in New York. When his Kurdish grandmother comes to the city for cancer treatment, he gets to know her and is deeply moved by an old folk song from Dersim that she sings to him. After her death, Jan decides to trace the song's origins, a quest that leads him to his ancestral lands and the painful history of Dersim. The cast includes Ahmet Aslan and Füsun Demirel.
