Tarık Akan — Biography

Tarık Akan, born Tarık Tahsin Üregül on 13 December 1949 in Istanbul, was a Turkish actor, producer and writer widely regarded as one of the defining figures of the Yeşilçam era. After studying mechanical engineering at Yıldız Technical University and later journalism, he won an acting contest organized by Ses magazine in 1970 and made his screen debut in 1971, quickly rising to stardom.

In his early career he became famous through romantic comedies and melodramas, among them Canım Kardeşim, the Hababam Sınıfı series in which he played Damat Ferit, and Ah Nerede. From the late 1970s onward he shifted toward socially and politically engaged cinema, starring in Maden, Sürü and Yılmaz Güney's Yol. The latter won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1982, brought him international recognition and earned him a Best Actor nomination.

Over a career spanning more than four decades and well over a hundred films, Akan won the Golden Orange for Best Actor a record seven times. Alongside acting he worked as a producer and published books. He died of lung cancer in Istanbul on 16 September 2016, at the age of 66.
